Chuck Jones once said, "The only way you're going to exercise the mind is by bringing new ideas to it." A designer might read this advice as a means to an end: Go study life. Why? It will help you on your journey to become a better designer. I thought this way for several years. I explored art, food, culture, craft, and thought for no reason other than: It's what I need to do to be better at my chosen career.
What a waste. What a poor way to interpret Jones' advice. A strong career makes a poor substitute for a life well-lived. I only recently realized this.
So here, in the near future, you will find my interests and pursuits outside of graphic design. I'll be showing work, interests, ideas, and hobbies that are — as I'm sure you've already guessed — beyond graphic design. More info to come. Until then, let me recommend this lovely nine-minute video about Chuck Jones' creative process.
